As many of you know I was in a little band called Swamp Mama Johnson. We were 5 women playing a "Funky, Bluesy, Groove Thang." We travelled all over North America, recorded several CDs and remained true to our ideals and goals bringing the music to our fans. Our drummer, Kim Carson, is one of the coolest, nicest, most creative, and most generous women I've ever had the pleasure to know and the pleasure to play with. She is courageously battling breast cancer! The music community, along with John at The Wild Buffalo House of Music are coming together to put on a spectacular show of music for you, our fans and supporters. We are donating our time and talent and asking you to donate $20 (or more if you can) to help Kim through this time.

the music community is coming out en force to support one of my dear friends and an old band comrade, Kim Carson. Kim Carson, the smiling drummer for Swamp Mama Johnson (previously) and now for the Margaret Wilder Band, is recovering from breast cancer. Several bands and solo performers will be donating their time and talent to raise money for her.
Even though Kim is insured, she hasn't been able to work full time because of the side effects of chemotherapy. I was emboldened and inspired by the story of another friend and musical ally, Miss Sonny "Smokin'" Hess. She went through a battle with breast cancer just last year. The blues/R&B community in Portland rallied around Sonny doing fund raisers and holding vigils. In a history making night at The Candlelight in Portland everyone came together for a benefit show and live recording. The ensuing CD of that night is the last known recording of Paul DeLay before he died. I'm on the record as well as many of Portland's top performers. Sonny donates a portion of the proceeds from each record sale to the Susan G. Komen fund. The collaboration and willingness of the community to support one of our own was heart-healing for me. The music biz is so often heart-wrenching that to have the opportunity to do something important was just that, important, life altering and hopefully an effective part of Sonny's healing process as well.
So, as I was saying, inspired by that story I'm putting together a benefit to help my friend Kim.
